  • Name Origin: The name "Bahamas" is thought to come from the Spanish word "baja mar," meaning "shallow sea," due to the relatively shallow waters surrounding the islands. 
  • Columbus's Arrival: Christopher Columbus is believed to have landed on San Salvador Island, one of the Bahamas, in 1492, marking his first landfall in the New World. 
  • Blue Holes: The Bahamas is home to Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island, which is the deepest known blue hole in the world, a flooded underwater cave. 
  • Pink Sand Beaches: Harbour Island boasts a beautiful pink sand beach, a result of the Foraminifera, a marine organism, and the coral sand. 
  • Swimming Pigs: Big Major Cay is famous for its friendly and curious swimming pigs, which attract visitors from around the world. 
  • Filming Location: The Bahamas is a popular filming location for Hollywood movies and television shows, with its stunning scenery and diverse landscapes. 
  • No Income Tax: The Bahamas does not have an income tax. 
  • Independent Status: The Bahamas gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973. 
  • National Bird: The national bird of the Bahamas is the flamingo.
