Algeria:

Dish:                       Mchewek

Description:      Mchewek is a traditional Algerian pastry made with almonds, sugar, and eggs. It has a soft, chewy inside and a crunchy outside, thanks to being rolled in slivered almonds before baking. The name Mchewek comes from the Arabic word meaning “prickly”  or “thorny,” referring to the pastry’s outer appearance. The slivered almonds covering the Mchewek give it a slightly rough and “spiky” texture, which is where the name comes from.

My Notes:            These were very easy to make. I made only half the amount by reducing the recipe quantities. They came out slightly on the dry side but were still very tasty. Love almonds!
